A new report of some of Australia’s largest media organisations has found most lack policies that explicitly address the online violence and harassment targeting women in the media.
The report, released today by Digital Rights Watch examined more than 25 policies, guidelines, and submissions from two public broadcasters (ABC, SBS), three commercial TV networks (Channels 7, 9, 10), and three digital news platforms (The Guardian Australia, News.com.au, and Sky News Australia). It found a systematic reliance on gender-neutral frameworks that fail to name or respond to the scale of abuse women face doing their jobs.
This report is an open invitation to media organisations in Australia to make online environments safer for women and join a growing movement of civil society organisations advocating for a better digital future for everyone.
